Singapore, 15 September 2011 - Malmaison by The Hour Glass was the perfect setting to launch a gentlemen's watch, the IWC Portofino Hand-Wound Eight Days, using the straps handcrafted by the legendary Italian shoemaker Santoni.
Glass were invited to preview the Portofino Hand-Wound Eight Days which comes in combinations of a red-gold case with slate-grey colored dial as well as a dark brown alligator leather strap; and stainless steel case, in either black dial with a dark brown strap, or silvered dial along with a brown strap. Other watches from the Portofino household, such as the automatics and chronographs, had been also on show. The evening was a perfect expression of a sophisticated men's planet, the classic elegance of the Portofino Hand-Wound as well as the distinctive beauty from the watch straps brought forth with installations of Santoni shoes on show amidst the fascinating interior of Malmaison, with its luxurious furnishings and oddly wonderful objects. Only in this kind of a setting could one totally enjoy and comprehend the union of a luxury watchmaker and a bespoke shoemaker, and that a watch can be a sight to behold when deemed the sum of all its components.
A Santoni craftsman was also on hand to demonstrate the craft of anticatura - colored dye is applied onto the leather a single finger rub at a time with consistency of strength and stroke, which produces a lovely and subtle layering of colour. It requires an knowledgeable craftsman some hours to a few days to complete a pair of shoes, and for the Portofino watchstrap, much more than a week to paint and allow the color to layer and keep quick into a gorgeous vintage effect. The underside of the strap is within the distinguishable Santoni orange.
